Troubleshooting

What to know when installing v2rayN on Windows / macOS / Linux?

v2rayN now covers Windows, macOS, and Linux—great for desktop users, but more packages mean it's easier to pick the wrong architecture or format. Each OS blocks first launches differently. This guide focuses on the install pitfalls that matter most so you can reach "import subscription" without detours.

Download: v2rayN download (filter by platform).

Pick the right OS and architecture first

On the download page, lock your OS first, then pick the architecture:

  • Windows: Most PCs use x64; Surface and Snapdragon devices use ARM64; choose x86 only if you know you're on 32-bit.
  • macOS: Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) → arm64 dmg; Intel → x64 dmg.
  • Linux: Try the universal zip on most distros; Debian/Ubuntu can use deb; ARM devices use arm64.

When unsure, pick the package marked "Recommended". Wrong architecture can fail to run or crash after install—it looks broken, but you downloaded the wrong file.

Windows: extract, run, and antivirus false positives

Windows packages are usually zip. Extract to a fixed folder (Documents or a tools drive)—not the browser temp folder. Run v2rayN.exe. If SmartScreen says "Windows protected your PC", expand More info and choose Run anyway—only if you downloaded from this site's channels.

Antivirus false positives are not rare for open-source proxy tools. Whitelist the entire extracted folder, not just one exe, and avoid unknown "optimized" builds. If a file was quarantined, restore it, whitelist, then reopen the client.

macOS: unknown developer and chip match

macOS is stricter with non–App Store apps. After opening the dmg and dragging to Applications, if you see an unverified developer warning, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and allow Open Anyway. If it says damaged or won't open, confirm you didn't mix up Intel vs Apple Silicon, then re-download.

Some setups need removing the quarantine attribute in Terminal, but most users only need Privacy & Security. If it crashes on first launch, check security software, or restart Finder / the Mac and try again.

Linux: zip vs deb

Want less package-manager friction? Use zip (extract and run). Prefer system menu integration? Use deb on Debian/Ubuntu. Either way, keep the full directory structure—don't copy a single binary. Install missing libraries per your distro's prompts, and ensure execute permission on the program files.

Linux desktops vary (GNOME, KDE, etc.). If system proxy switching fails, configure the browser proxy alone to verify, and check the client's Tun / system proxy docs.

Do these three checks after install

  1. The client opens reliably and doesn't quit immediately.
  2. You can open subscription management (the app is complete).
  3. System time sync is enabled.

Pass these three before importing a subscription—otherwise you won't know if install or the subscription is broken.

Security and update tips

Only get installers from trusted download hubs; when updating, overwrite the same folder and back up your subscription config. Don't import random "cracked cores". Managed work PCs may need admin approval to run.

What to do next

After install, follow the subscription import tutorial to add a subscription and connect after a speed test. If the client shows connected but pages won't load, read connection troubleshooting. On phones, use the v2rayNG install tutorial.

Desktop details differ, but the goal is the same: get the right package, clear OS blocks, and reach a configurable state. Hit those three and v2rayN install is done.

Remember: keep a fixed extract folder, and confirm the client starts before updating subscriptions.

One more tip: when updating the desktop client, quit running v2rayN first, then overwrite files so nothing is locked. Open once after update to confirm version and subscriptions. If a subscription is missing, re-add from your backup URL—nodes live with the provider and don't vanish because you reinstalled.

Note your install folder, subscription backups, and preferred regions—migrating to a new PC will be much faster.
