v2rayN Tutorial (Desktop)

Setup for Windows, macOS, and Linux: subscription import, speed tests, and system proxy.

v2rayN is a cross-platform desktop client for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It supports subscription import, smart routing, and VMess, VLESS, Trojan, and Shadowsocks. Below: download → import → pick a node → enable proxy.

  1. Download and install v2rayN

    Open this site’s v2rayN download and pick the package for your OS:

    • Windows: most PCs use the x64 zip; extract and run v2rayN.exe. If antivirus blocks it, whitelist the extracted folder.
    • macOS: Apple Silicon → arm64 dmg; Intel → x64. If macOS warns about an unidentified developer, allow it under Privacy & Security.
    • Linux: prefer the universal zip; Debian/Ubuntu can also use .deb. Extract or install, then launch the app.

    Keep the full program folder—don’t copy only the executable. On Windows especially, avoid placing it in a temp folder.

  2. Import a subscription URL or a single node

    Before configuring, prepare the provider’s subscription URL, or a single node share string (common prefixes: vmess://, vless://, trojan://, ss://). v2rayN commonly supports three import methods:

    • Subscription URL (recommended): in Subscription management, add a subscription, paste the full URL, save, then click “Update subscription”. Nodes are created in bulk and you can refresh later with one click.
    • Import from clipboard: copy the node text, then use “Import config from clipboard”. Best for adding a few nodes temporarily.
    • Scan QR code: if your provider shares a QR code, use the scan feature to add it.

    After a successful import, the main server list should show nodes for multiple regions. If it’s empty, check that the subscription was copied in full, that your network can reach the subscription URL, then update again.

  3. Node speed test and selection

    Node quality varies a lot within the same subscription—don’t connect at random. Tips:

    • Run a latency test on the current group and prefer lower values that succeed.
    • Filter by region (e.g. Japan, Singapore, US, Hong Kong) and pick one close to the sites you visit.
    • If a node keeps timing out, switch to the next. Most “can’t connect” cases are a single bad node, not a broken client.
  4. Enable system proxy and verify

    After selecting a working node, enable System proxy (or Tun mode if that fits your setup better). Once the tray icon shows Connected:

    • Open a webpage in your browser to confirm access works.
    • We recommend enabling smart routing / bypass rules: local sites and apps go direct, everything else uses the proxy—usually faster and more stable than a global proxy.
    • If only the browser needs a proxy, you can set it there alone; for most users, system proxy is simplest.

    That’s the basic v2rayN setup. Afterward, just “Update subscription” regularly and re-test when a node fails.

v2rayNG Tutorial (Android)

How to set up the most common V2Ray client on Android phones/tablets: subscriptions, QR scan, and per-app proxy.

v2rayNG is the leading V2Ray client on Android and pairs well with desktop v2rayN. It supports subscription import, QR add, and per-app routing—great for daily phone use. This guide uses the universal APK.

  1. Download and install the v2rayNG APK

    Go to v2rayNG download. If you’re unsure of your device, pick the universal APK; recent mainstream phones can also use ARM64-v8a. Install steps:

    • Open the APK with the system file manager and follow the install prompts.
    • If you see “Unknown sources blocked”, go to Settings → Security / App management, allow the current install source, then retry.
    • After install, open v2rayNG and grant required permissions when prompted (VPN permission will also be requested when you connect).
  2. Import via subscription, clipboard, or QR code

    Tap “+” in the top right or Add in the menu, then choose based on what you have:

    • Subscription URL: paste the subscription URL, save, then update. Best for importing many nodes at once and refreshing later.
    • Import from clipboard: copy a vmess:// / vless:// (etc.) node string and import—good for adding one quickly.
    • Scan QR code: point at the provider’s QR code; after camera permission, it will recognize and add it.

    After a successful import, groups or nodes appear in the config list. If update fails, check that the subscription link wasn’t truncated and that the phone’s network works, then tap Update again.

  3. Select a node and connect

    Tap the target node in the list (check latency or try connecting manually), return to the home screen, and tap the large Connect button. The system will ask for a VPN connection—tap “OK / Allow” so v2rayNG can handle traffic.

    • When status shows Connected, verify with a browser or app.
    • If you can’t connect, switch nodes first, then update the subscription—don’t jump straight to reinstalling the client.
    • The notification bar usually shows a VPN key icon when the proxy is running.
  4. Advanced: per-app proxy and battery tips

    If you only want some apps to use the proxy (e.g. browser, video), enable Per-app proxy in settings and check the apps that need it; others go direct. This often saves battery and reduces compatibility issues.

    Also: disconnect on the home screen when idle; for long background use, turn off aggressive battery restrictions for the app in system settings so it isn’t killed and dropped.

V2flyNG Tutorial (Android)

Setup for the v2fly community Android client—very similar to v2rayNG.

V2flyNG also runs on Android and supports VMess, VLESS, Trojan, Shadowsocks, and subscription management. If you already know v2rayNG, migration is nearly seamless; if you’re new, the three steps below are enough.

  1. Install V2flyNG

    Get the APK from V2flyNG download and install it. Allow unknown sources, then open the app. Like v2rayNG, it’s distributed as a local package, not via app stores.

  2. Add a subscription or server nodes

    Import in bulk via subscription URL, or add a single node from clipboard / QR scan. Then open the server list to view nodes and run a latency check. Update the subscription first, then pick a lower-latency node so you don’t hit dead routes.

  3. Enable the proxy and check traffic

    Select a node, turn on the connection switch, and grant VPN permission. Once connected, you’re online. Some UIs show traffic or speed charts to judge node stability; if speed stays bad, switching nodes usually beats toggling connect repeatedly.

At the protocol layer, all three cover daily needs (VMess / VLESS / Trojan / Shadowsocks). What usually shapes the experience is subscription quality and node selection, not the client name. Pick by OS, then nail import and speed testing—more important than version debates.

General V2Ray client setup tips

Whether you use v2rayN, v2rayNG, or V2flyNG, these habits cut down on “can’t connect, slow, or flaky” issues.

Update subscriptions regularly

Nodes expire, get added/removed, or change ports. Tap “Update subscription” in the client regularly so your list stays in sync with the provider—don’t keep using months-old nodes.

Speed-test before connecting

One subscription may have dozens of nodes. Run a latency check first and prefer low values that succeed; connecting to the first one blindly fails more often.

Use smart routing

With routing / bypass rules on, traffic that doesn’t need a proxy goes direct and the rest uses your node—usually more stable and faster than “global proxy”, with fewer login-state glitches.

Can’t connect? Switch nodes first

Most failures are a single bad node, not a broken app. Suggested order: switch node → update subscription → check the proxy switch → reinstall last.

Watch local time

Some protocols are sensitive to system time. If every node fails, check that the PC/phone has automatic time sync—large skew can break the handshake.

Download only from trusted sources

Get packages from this site’s client download page; avoid unknown “modded” builds. Open-source clients are free—be wary of packages that charge oddly or force ads.
